Do you trust a #mining giant with our natural heritage? - #arctic #salmon #wildlife #BP #boycottbp #oilspill

The following message, urging Americans to tell mining giant Anglo American to abandon its plans for digging the disastrous Pebble Mine in Alaska's wildlife Eden of Bristol Bay, was sent to you by http://www.SaveBioGems.org

Dear Friend,

Last spring we ratcheted up the pressure on Anglo American and its disastrous plan to build a mega-mine in Alaska's pristine Bristol Bay watershed. We presented a Petition -- signed by 100,000 concerned Americans -- at Anglo's Shareholder's Meeting on Earth Day!

But in the wake of the Gulf oil spill disaster, we need to do more. It's time to tell Anglo American we're not buying its promises of environmental responsibility. BP made plenty of promises, too. Then it proved that corporate claims ring hollow and worst-case scenarios do happen. Tell Anglo American you don't want another corporate giant gambling with the future of a priceless ecosystem.

http://www.savebiogems.org/bristolbay/pebble/action

Oil, gas and mining companies like to say: Trust us.

Anglo American is promising plenty of studies and environmental impact statements. They will claim that a massive release of mining waste is a 'worst case scenario' that will never happen. They will claim that Bristol Bay - the world's largest salmon fishery and home to abundant bears, moose and caribou - is in no danger from the colossal Pebble Mine.

How gullible do they think we are?

Every large copper and gold mine on Earth has suffered spills and other disasters, including acid runoff and mercury contamination. Anglo American's own plans say that the Pebble Mine will spew some 10 billion tons of mining waste, laced with toxic chemicals, that must be stored behind massive earthen dams FOREVER in an active earthquake zone. Nothing lasts forever. The only question is, when will those dams fail? The wildlife, fishermen and Native communities of Bristol Bay cannot afford to find out the answer, because they stand to pay the ultimate price in a devastated ecosystem.

Please stand in solidarity with them by telling Anglo American you won't let them roll the dice with Bristol Bay.

http://www.savebiogems.org/bristolbay/pebble/action

Polluters like to think our attention spans are short. They believe they can wait until "the storm blows over," and then go back to business as usual.

Let them know they're wrong. Tell Anglo that, after the Gulf spill, you're not buying any more corporate promises. Sincerely, Peter Lehner NRDC Executive Director

CREDO: Become a citizen endorser of Stop Texas #Oil - Stop CA prop 23 - #gas #koch #BP Spill #boycottbp #oilspill

Dear Friend,

Texas oil companies are spending millions of dollars to reverse
California's landmark global warming law with a deceptive ballot
initiative this November.

Fighting them won't be easy, but we can do it by showing how many
Californians oppose this dirty proposition, and exposing the out-of-state
oil companies behind it.

I just added my name as a citizen endorser of the "Stop Texas Oil: Hell No
on 23" campaign.

I thought you might want to add your name as well, and help build the
grassroots campaign against the Texas oil companies who are trying to
abolish our global warming law.

Tell the EPA: Protect Our Families from Toxic #Coal Ash - Disaster in Tennessee - #BP Oil Spill #boycottbp

Hello,

I just signed a petition to urge the EPA to protect our streams, our drinking water and our health from coal ash contamination.

As you may know, coal ash is a toxic solid waste produced by coal-burning power plants. It's shockingly unregulated and it is piling up at more than 600 dump sites across the country.

Just over a year and a half ago, the town of Harriman, Tennessee was engulfed by coal ash when a holding pond at a local power plant ruptured. A black tidal wave ripped homes off their foundations, killed birds and fish, and contaminated drinking water supplies and nearby rivers with a toxic soup of arsenic, mercury, lead and other carcinogenic chemicals.

The Tennessee coal ash disaster is just one shocking example of how coal ash afflicts communities. Coal ash dumps routinely leach toxins into drinking water, increasing cancer, learning disabilities, birth defects and other illnesses.

Thankfully, the EPA is currently considering the first-ever federal safeguards for coal ash disposal. Our voices are critical to achieving strong protections for communities, because greedy coal and utility lobbyists are pressuring the EPA to maintain the toxic status quo.

Please join me in speaking out. You can take action here: http://action.foe.org/coalashcomments

Thanks for considering this!

Oil Threatens #Endangered #Whales! - #greenpeace #BP Oil Spill #boycottbp #oilspill #whale

Hey there,

I just sent a message through Greenpeace to Dr. Jane Lubchenco, the head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, asking her to protect the sperm whale and the entire Gulf ecosystem by establishing marine reserves in ecologically critical areas. We can't afford another disaster like the one in the Gulf. Join me and take action here:

http://us.greenpeace.org/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=705&s_src=taf&sub_src=ty

Greenpeace has sent a ship to the Gulf to do an independent assessment of the possible damage done to the sperm whale population. Hopefully, people like Dr. Lubchenco make sure the next disaster never happens.

Keep Oil Drilling Out of #Florida #Panther Habitat - #endangered #BP Oil Spill #boycottbp #oilspill

Big Cypress National Preserve was created in 1974 to stave off a proposed airport in the heart of the western Everglades. Now Miami-Dade County, whose land surrounds the preserve, finds itself with a cash shortfall and a proposal has been made to squeeze the money it lacks for airport expansion out of the very nature preserve that was set aside to prevent new airport construction - Big Cypress.

Under the proposal, Miami-Dade County would lease out the land for oil drilling — a cynical, grasping move that would undermine decades of preservation and be certain to hurt Florida panthers. Already one of the most endangered species on the planet, panthers depend on Big Cypress for living space.

For now, the proposal has been shelved at the last minute by Miami Mayor Carlos Alvarez due to public outcry. But though it won’t be discussed at the very next county commission meeting, this destructive plan could still be brought to life again. And we need to make sure that doesn’t happen.

So please, send a letter asking Miami's mayor to make sure this absurd and destructive idea to allow new oil operations in the Big Cypress National Preserve remains completely off the table.

130 million tons of toxic #coal ash - #BP Oil Spill #boycottbp #oilspill

Hi -

Did you know that coal companies dump more than 130 million tons of coal ash, containing toxins like arsenic, chromium, lead and mercury, into the air every year?

There are next to no federal regulations on it -- it's loosely regulated on a state-by-state basis. In some states, it's less regulated than household waste. All too often, coal ash gets dumped into our landfills and waste ponds -- and from there it leaks into our drinking water and fragile ecosystems. Right now, the EPA is considering options that could either reel in Dirty Coal's assault on the environment or maintain the status quo. I just signed a petition demanding the EPA say no to the status quo! I hope you will too -- it just takes a second.

Help Increase Critical Sea #Turtle Protections - #BP Oil Spill #boycottbp #oilspill #turtles

Dear Friend,
The oil disaster in the Gulf has only increased the stress placed on the loggerhead sea turtle as their nesting season along the Gulf coast falls right between April and September. Please send a quick, but important message letting the National Marine Fisheries Service know that you support increased protections for the loggerhead sea turtle. http://bit.ly/aMxW3K

Join Robert Redford in defending the #Arctic Refuge - #BP Oil Spill #boycottbp #oilspill #bears #wildlife

Dear Friend,

Last week NRDC celebrated a major victory when a federal court stopped oil and gas companies from drilling in Alaska's Chukchi Sea -- one of our nation's two Polar Bear Seas.

But that ruling does NOT apply to Shell's plans for drilling off the coast of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in the Beaufort -- the second of the two Polar Bear Seas.

Please watch my new video about this critical issue.

http://www.savebiogems.org/stopshell

President Obama has stopped Shell's offshore drilling for this drilling season.

But Shell will be back next summer, sinking its drill bits into the Beaufort Sea -- unless you and I apply overwhelming public pressure to stop them.

We can't afford a repeat of the Gulf oil spill disaster in America's Arctic.

That's why, after you watch my video, I need you to join me in signing our Petition, which urges President Obama to impose a seven-year timeout on offshore drilling in the Arctic. That reprieve is urgently needed so that scientists can carefully study the real risks of drilling in this most sensitive of all environments.

http://www.savebiogems.org/stopshell

You and I must act now to avert a disaster in the Arctic.

Please tell President Obama to stand up to the oil industry and put the Arctic off-limits to offshore drilling for seven years.

http://www.savebiogems.org/stopshell

Thank you for fighting alongside NRDC to keep the Arctic wild and free.

Sincerely,

Robert Redford
Trustee, Natural Resources Defense Council

P.S. Time is running out. Shell has said they will apply soon for permits allowing them to drill next summer. Does anyone really believe that oil drilling in the Arctic will be perfectly safe by next summer? A spill in the Arctic would be devastating to polar bears and other wildlife. Please watch my urgent video and then take action to help stop Shell. Thank you.

Gulf Oil Spill: BP Tries To Block Release Of Oil Spill Research

“That’s not wrong. Those are the rules of the game,” he said. “It’s the survival of a company, the survival of a crucial industry is at stake in a vital market area. This is serious business.”

It IS wrong, seriously wrong to withhold data that could be of benefit to people who have been adversely affected by the spill. It should not be a surprise that there are scientists who do not want to participate in the obfuscation of crucial facts. Fast track the data.
