Dear Michael L.,

I'm Christina Simeone, Policy Director here at Repower
America, and I wanted to share an important piece of news
with you.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is planning
to limit global warming pollution from big fossil fuel
industries like power plants and petroleum refineries. These
industries alone account for about 40% of the global warming pollution in the U.S. -- making them the two largest sources
of emissions.

Here's where you come in. The EPA is charged with developing
rules called New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) that
will protect public health, reduce the pollution that causes
climate change, and send a signal to polluters that they
need to invest in clean energy technologies.

It's crucial that the EPA sticks to its schedule and develops
strong rules. Between now and March 18, the EPA is accepting
comments on their plans. They will definitely be receiving
comments from the coal, gas and oil industries. Make sure
they hear from you, too.

These rules are common sense. The EPA was created to
understand our impact on our environment and protect the
health of our people. An overwhelming majority of scientists are united in their understanding of the effects of global warming pollution and the EPA is charged with developing rules based on that science. Yet strong special interest groups are working to derail that process.

The EPA needs to hear that you support their efforts to
limit global warming pollution from these industries. That's
why you need to encourage the EPA to issue strong New Source
Performance Standards without delay.

The science is clear: Climate change is happening.
Unfortunately, big polluters will make big profits if they
mislead the American public about that fact. We need you to
counteract and counterbalance their money and their voice by
sending a comment to the EPA today.

Fill out the form below, and we'll deliver your comment to
the EPA before the March 18 deadline:

Gulf Oil Spill: BP Tries To Block Release Of Oil Spill Research

“That’s not wrong. Those are the rules of the game,” he said. “It’s the survival of a company, the survival of a crucial industry is at stake in a vital market area. This is serious business.”

It IS wrong, seriously wrong to withhold data that could be of benefit to people who have been adversely affected by the spill. It should not be a surprise that there are scientists who do not want to participate in the obfuscation of crucial facts. Fast track the data.

Greater Protection Sought for Sea #Turtles Imperiled by #BP's Oil Spill - #boycottbp #oilspill #gulf

"HOUSTON— With BP’s massive oil spill in the Gulf pushing rare sea turtles closer than ever to extinction, two environmental groups today petitioned the federal government for an emergency extension of the shrimp fishery seasonal closure. The closure is scheduled to expire Thursday, July 15. The groups also asked the National Marine Fisheries Service to conduct an analysis required by the Endangered Species Act before allowing the fishery to open as usual to determine whether sea turtles would be jeopardized."

It is wonderful to see people thinking ahead about these things.  Giving the fisheries adequate time to recover and assure that any residual contamination is gone will be a crucial components for the recovery of both the environment and the gulf industries.  In doing so, we can save some endangered turtles.

What will get #sick from the slick? - #gulf #coast #wildlife: #fish, #sea turtles, #whale sharks, #tuna

Melissa Gaskill reported as follows in Nature News:

Far from the tar-coated beaches and clean-up crews seen on nightly news programmes, the Deepwater Horizon disaster is exacting an ongoing and largely unknown toll. In the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico, floating oil slicks and subsurface plumes threaten a highly diverse ecosystem. According to a 2009 inventory by the Harte Research Institute (HRI) for Gulf of Mexico Studies at Texas A&M University in Corpus Christi, the area around the ill-fated rig hosts 1,728 species, among them whale sharks, tarpon, tuna, sea turtles and sperm whales. With no end in sight for the spill, researchers are now struggling to understand the scope and nature of the damage to deep-ocean ecosystems through some of the Gulf's largest residents.
